In 1368, Muhammad Shah became the 1

Sultan of Brunei and by the mid 15
th
century, Brunei had reached its Golden Age of wealth and power.
The Portuguese were mostly interested in Brunei for trade in the 16
th
century, but Spain was far more hostile towards in and captured Manila in 1571.
When Brooke became White Rajah of Sarawak he tried to take Brunei, but they asked Britain for protection, and finally became a British Protectorate in 1888, and soon after was ceded to North Borneo.
Hashim Jahil Alam Aqauddin, son of Omar Ali Saifuddin II, was the 26
th
Sultan of Brunei from 1885-1906.  He lost some of his land to Brooke in 1890 but struck a Treaty of Protection with Britain, and lost most all of his power as Sultan, but kept his country pretty much intact.  His sons died from cholera in 1903, a tragedy that he never really recovered from, and he died in 1906.
