SCHILDKRAUT COMPACT ~ WINDMILL SCENE ~ GUILLOCHE HAND PAINTED ENAMEL ~NEVER USED
The detailed scene depicts details of a cloudy day in the growing season.  There is the bunkered canal, people in the green field, a church or castle in the background, an orange roofed house, and some other things.  Never used, though the puff and sifter is missing.  Paper tab on mirror indicates Genuine Cloisonne (though this enamel work is not Cloisonne).  The mirror is clean and bright.  The powder compartment metal cover doesn't want to stay closed. The exterior is excellent.  The top is slightly rounded off at on the sides. Size is 3 inches x 2 3/8 x1/4 inch.
About Cloisonne and Guilloche..   This compact is Guilloche enamel,  hand painted between layers.  Generally, a layer of color enamel is baked onto metal which has had a pattern made by a lathe'.  Then layers of clear enamel may be added, then the hand painting in layers as required, then more clear enamel baked on.  Many steps required and the fine hand of a good artist.  The background on this one looks something like white iridescent  seashell.  There is some perception of depth noted in the clouds the gray is over the whiter colors.
Cloisonne in appearance it distinctive in that each color is separated by a thin wall of metal, which will still be visible after completion.  The technique is to solder or glue wire or metal strips to a base plate, making small cells for each color.  The enamel, in powder form and most often opaque, is then filled in each cell, which contains the colors and keeps them distinct when the piece is fired.  On a flat piece usually one firing is required.
