  • Condition: Up for auction is a black enamel La Mode powder compact that is very thin. On the backside, there is a circular gold colored inset with some strange designs. Probably from the late 1930’s. The lid is a black enamel whose finish is commiserate with its age. That is there are a number of scratches on the compact, but nothing that slices thru the black. Compact is edged in a silver colored metalCompact is a little difficult to open. There is a small tab, and I put my thumbnail underneath to open and pull it open. When compact is opened, I believe the mirror is metal. There are several spots of rust on the mirror—see photo 3. The top of the powder puff is in good condition. The underside of the compact appears to have been used and has 2 drk spots and has been used with some dark brown/pink powder. Lid area that opens is very flat. The gold area underside is a little more rounded. See description for additional information and photos. Thanks!

    Up for auction is a black enamel La Mode powder compact that is very thin.  On the backside, there is a circular gold colored inset with some strange designs. Probably from the late 1930’s.   I am selling a friends collection of compacts, and this is one of the compacts from her 30 year old collection!
    This is an extremely narrow compact
    The lid is a black enamel whose finish is commiserate with its age.  That is there are a number of scratches on the compact, but nothing that slices thru the black.  Compact is edged in a silver colored metal
    Compact is a little difficult to open.  There is a small tab, and I put my thumbnail underneath to open and pull it open
    When compact is opened, I believe the mirror is metal.  There are several spots of rust on the mirror—see photo 3
    The top of the powder puff is in good condition.  The underside of the compact appears to have been used and has 2 drk spots and has been used with some dark brown/pink powder
    There is a metal area to slide the puff into and this also has the name of La Mode written in very small script
    This compact would have loose powder.  Part of the bottom of the powder well slides around so you can access the powder
    Underside of the compact is more rounded.  It has a beautiful circular gold inset, that has some lettering I do not recognize.  The edges are black like the lid
    Circumference of the compact is about 2 ¾ inches round
    La Mode made some beautiful compacts in its day, so the fact that this compact is so thin, with an unusual design makes it rather special!
