This is a very nice, low mintage, silver, 1896
"Five Cents"
from the British
"Straits Settlements"
.
The Settlements became the modern nation of Malaysia. The
"Straits Settlements"
were first established in 1826 by the East India Company. At first governed from India, they became a British Crown Colony in 1867. The
"colony"
ended after World War II.
Coins had first been struck for the Straits Settlements by the
"British East India Company"
in 1845.
Following the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858, the Straits Settlements were transferred to the
"India Office"
in London.
Weight: 1.33 Gram, 15 Millimeter, .800 Silver. Mintage: 960,000.

The Coin:
A pleasing specimen, it saw some use and earned its way in the world for a time, earning some marks, light wear and dirt. I believe one of the hands it passed through cleaned it long ago but it has toned down some since. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
