Very Rare and original, ca1870’s American Tin Hunter on Horseback with Greyhound Dog Platform Toy / Pull Toy manufactured by Hull & Stafford of Clinton, Connecticut. This charming, larger size, Tin Floor Toy measures approx. 8 1/2" long overall, 6 1/2” tall (to the top of the rider’s head) and 3 1/4”wide across the rear wheels.
The Toy features a full figured Tin Horse with a male rider. The Rider wears a red Huntsman’s coat and a hat. Beside the Hunter’s horse there is a full figured Greyhound dog. The sleek hunting dog is depicted in full stride and the horse at a trot. The wheeled tin platform is shape cut and embossed and has four, cast iron wheels. This is a wonderful and somewhat Folk Art / Primitive Pressed Tin Platform Toy and, although it is not signed, the form of the Hunter, the Hunter’s hat and the horse identify it as having been manufactured by Hull & Stafford.
This charming and very rare, ca1870’s American Tin Hunter and Greyhound of Platform Pull Toy displays nicely but does have some damage. The horse lacks its tail and the real leg of the horse is detached at the top of the hoof (with no loss). There are bends to the platform as can be seen in the scans below. Significant remnants of the original surface paint is present as can be seen in the scans below and the paint is 100% original – the Toy has never been repainted, restored, touched up or altered in any way.
